Target audience: Who's Watching?

As a member of the target audience, I can speak for myself here. Psychological horror and thriller films attract a niche but highly engaged audience. Audience that craves more than just surface level jumpscares. These films entice people who are intrigued by the human mind, human behaviour, and movies that leave them thinking, changing their view of life. Some solid examples, that are my personal favourite: Us, The platform, Shutter island, Parasite, and The forgotten. Unlike traditional cinema horror that counts on gore or supernatural elements, these movies are rooted in tension and inner battles, suspense, and moral paradox, making the experience as much intellectual and gut wrenching as it is.

The target audience for these films often seek content that challenges their perceptions and leave them questioning characters, decisions, or even their own understanding of reality. They enjoy narratives that twist expectations, build psychological tension, and explore existential or societal themes, such as greed, inequality, obsession, or paranoia. At heart, these viewers are drawn to storytelling that engages the brain as much as it does the senses.

Demographically, psychological thrillers attract young adults and adults aged 18 -45, particularly those who enjoy thought provoking entertainment that sparks conversation and debate. For filmmakers, production companies, and marketing teams, understanding this audience is essential. Psychological horror and thriller viewers value highly conceptual ideas, complex characters, and mind boggling plots, meaning promotional strategies that highlight analytical storylines or innovative cinematic techniques are likely to impact the target audience.
